Why Moisturizing Your Skin & Cuticles Is So Important in the Winter

Updated: Feb 18

By Dr. Maria Kasper

Have you been dealing with drier, tighter, and flakier skin this season? If so, you are not alone! At PGH Nailworks & Co., we have noticed an influx of dry cuticles and flaky skin. This year, Pittsburgh’s winter weather has definitely made itself known. Between the lower than average temperatures, gusty winds, and piles of snow, it’s no surprise your skin is feeling the impact.

Thankfully this is a problem with an easy solution, however it’s important to understand why our skin reacts to winter differently. Both the cold outdoor air and indoor heated air create low humidity levels that pull moisture from the skin. On top of that, our skin naturally produces less oil in colder weather, which makes it harder to hold onto hydration. If you add in hot showers and frequent handwashing, it’s only natural for your skin to feel rough, cracked, and uncomfortable.

Small habit, big win! Moisturizing Your hands and cuticles consistently helps.

What Can You Do?

The most important step is simple: moisturize consistently. While lotions are helpful, we recommend using a thick, rich cream immediately after showering or washing your hands. Creams provide a stronger and occlusive barrier that traps existing moisture in and simultaneously adding extra hydrating nutrients. Even though it’s a small habit, you will feel a noticeable difference even after the first application.

Your cuticles are also a pivotal component, yet most of us tend to overlook them. Dry cuticles can crack, split, and cause painful hangnails—making even a fresh manicure look worn. Making sure they stay hydrated not only protects your skin’s health, but also ameliorates your manicures and pedicures, making them last longer and look fresher!

Cuticle Oil or Cuticle Balm – Which is Better?

This is an age old question and contrary to popular belief, there is a big difference between the two:

Cuticle Balm: If your lifestyle consists of frequent handwashing or contact with water, balms will be your best friend. The thick nature of cuticle balms create a protective barrier and provides deeper, longer-lasting nourishment.

Cuticle Oil: If you are looking to add some extra hydration through the day, pick up a cuticle oil. These are lightweight and fast-absorbing, perfect for on the go use or whenever your cuticles need a quick pick-me-up.

PGH NailWorks Secret Tip: Our nail technicians have been recommending a rotating system to their clients. In the mornings, apply a cuticle oil and then follow with your balm before bed for extra repair while they sleep.

Hydrate & Heal This Winter

Our salon’s current favorite is the Zoya Hydrate and Heal System, a two-step treatment specifically designed to deeply replenish winter-stressed skin. It’s highly effective and very simple to use!

Step one: Apply the hydration serum. It is formulated with hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to improve the look and feel of the skin. Unlike most serums, Zoya’s absorbs quickly and leaves no sticky residue.

Step two: Apply the rich cream. The formula is curated to lock in moisture and penetrate layers of your skin to provide long-lasting softness.

This treatment is now part of our Luxe Works Manicure at PGH Nailworks & Co. in Pittsburgh, PA. The Luxe Works manicure also features a warm hydrating paraffin treatment and an extended massage, making it the perfect manicure for this time of year. The Zoya Hydrate and Heal System Kit is also available for retail purchase so you can continue caring for your skin at home all winter long.

Don’t Neglect Your Feet

During the winter, our feet stay tucked away in comfy socks or boots, so it’s easy to forget about them. Many people wait until spring to “fix” them, but maintaining them now makes all the difference later. Keeping calluses under control and moisturizing your feet and legs regularly helps prevent cracking and buildup, so when sandal season returns, you’re already ahead.

Escape the Winter with Our Seasonal Pedicure

Our Winter Escape Pedicure features a deeply hydrating mask from Qtica, packed with revitalizing ingredients and antioxidants to leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and youthful. Our current featured scent is Vanilla Wild Plum—and both our clients and staff can’t get enough of it.
